support/faqs/login

Came up more than once:

OP:

so far I've been logging into the server through ssh <netId>@student-linux.tudelft.nl, when I'm not on campus. But today I cannot reach this server. The two error messages I've received so far are: "Connection closed by 131.180.123.201 port 22" and "ssh: connect to host student-linux.tudelft.nl port 22: Connection timed out". Any clues on what could be causing this?

Robbert:

The Connection closed message is usually an indication of too many failed authentication attempts. That can be either because of using the wrong authentication method (only password authentication is supported, try ssh -o PreferredAuthentications=password) or because of an incorrect password.

The Connection timed out message is usually an indication of a ban of your connection due to too many failed login attempts. The ban will be lifted automatically after a cooldown period. However, the ban will become permanent when your connection was banned multiple times already. So do not keep retrying the failing attempts. (There is no point, when it doesn't work the first time, it certainly won't work the second time.)

If you still get connection timeout, You can file a request through the Self-Service portal (via the "I have a general question form"). Note: do not mention DAIC. The student-linux bastion is a campus wide facility for everybody, it's not linked to DAIC and not supported by DAIC's admins. Thanks!
